Heartbreak news, The Brewers head coach, Pat Murphy, has officially announced his retirement due to the comeback of Craig Counsell.
Pat Murphy, who has spent forty years coaching, is taking his first real crack at major league management.
The 64-year-old was formally named by the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday morning as the team’s 20th manager in franchise history.
Murphy agreed to a three-year contract, taking over for the departing Craig Counsell. Murphy will be introduced by the Brewers at a press conference on Thursday at 11 a.m.
General manager Matt Arnold stated in a news release that Pat Murphy “brings a wealth of experience, knowledge, and passion for the game of baseball as well as a familiarity with the Brewers organization, players, staff, and culture.” “The last few seasons have seen the franchise experience unheard-of levels of success, and Pat has played a major role in that run. Pat’s decision to stay with the Brewers is appreciated, and we are happy to announce his promotion to manager today.
Former Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks, who has been promoted to associate manager, is also formally joining Murphy’s team.
Weeks, 41, played for the Brewers for 11 years after being selected in the first round by Milwaukee in 2003. In 2022, he returned to the team in a player-development capacity.
In the press announcement, Arnold stated, “Rickie was a hard-nosed, homegrown player for the Brewers for many years and is now a valued member of our coaching staff.” We anticipate that in his new position, he will bring many of the qualities he had as a player to the dugout.
The whole 2023 coaching staff, including numerous title changes among the eight returnees, will join Murphy and Weeks.
The team has appointed Jim Henderson as assistant pitching coach, Walker McKinven, who is starting his sixth season with Milwaukee, as coordinator of run prevention, and Nestor Corredor, who is entering his second season as major-league field coordinator.
In addition, hitting coaches Ozzie Timmons and Connor Dawson (third seasons), first-base coach Quintin Berry (fourth season), pitching coach Chris Hook (sixth season), and third-base coach Jason Lane (ninth season) are all returning.
Murphy, on the other hand, moves up to the dugout’s top position after serving as Counsell’s bench coach for the previous eight seasons. On November 2, 2015, he was appointed to that role, taking Jerry Narron’s place.
Murphy’s only other previous managerial experience came in the 2015 season with the San Diego Padres, when he temporarily replaced the fired Bud Black on June 16 after Counsell was fired. Other than covering for Counsell for two games with the Brewers in 2021 and 2023,.
