To start the Canadian Football League (CFL) season, it was west vs east.

The 2022 season, which will be the first full season since before the epidemic, began on Thursday with the Calgary Stampeders welcoming the Montreal Alouettes.

With 30 seconds left, Rene Paredes kicked a 38-yard field goal to give the Stamps a 30-27 victory. After trailing 24-14 at the half, Calgary came through with a 16-3 second-half score to defeat the Alouettes.

According to head coach Dave Dickenson, his squad was effective, waiting until the very end to try for the end zone rather than a field goal.

“I won’t claim that any one of the three phases—special teams, offense, and defense—was flawless, but the guys never gave up,” Dickenson remarked. It was us who decided to make the plays late.

“We achieved touchdowns. For me, that’s the main factor—once we were down, we scored. We were able to eventually punch one in because the field goals were becoming a little iffy in the third quarter, Dickenson said.

Bo Levi Mitchell, the quarterback for the Stampeders, completed 21 of 34 pass attempts for 199 yards. However, in the fourth quarter, Mitchell would exit the game with a minor limp, and Jake Maier, the backup, would take over for Calgary on its final two drives.

Dickenson thinks Mitchell had a cramp or spasm in his leg.

After placing third in the division, the local three-down team was eliminated in the west semifinal, capping an unsatisfactory season.
