By offering the Sunderland head coach a lot of leeway, he greatly enhanced Jay Matete’s approval to join the squad.
Last season, Matete excelled while on loan at Plymouth, as he helped the Pilgrims win the league and earn promotion.
He was supposed to return to Sunderland’s first squad for this season, but a knee injury he suffered during the US tour kept him even further out of contention.

But since his recent comeback, the team has chosen to send him out on loan once more in order to give him additional playing time and speed up his recuperation.
Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman stated, “We were happy with Jay’s progress last season and he returned from his loan spell ready to challenge for a place in our team.”
“He regrettably had a setback during the preseason, but he has put in a lot of effort to become healthy again and be prepared for the second half of the season.
“We hope that this move gives Jay a platform to play regularly in the coming months, as that will best support his immediate needs.”
