Kyra Elzy, the head coach of Kentucky’s women’s basketball team, was let go on Monday following the Wildcats’ first Southeastern Conference Tournament victory since 1982 and two losing seasons.
Tennessee defeated Kentucky 76-62 on Thursday in the SEC Tournament, capping an 11-20 overall record that included 4-12 in league play during the regular season. Elzy finished 61-60 over four seasons and 8-3 in the conference tournament, but in the two seasons since taking home the championship, Kentucky has not advanced past the quarterfinals. Last season’s 12-19 record (2-14 SEC) was followed by this season’s bottom half finish.
Elzy’s accomplishments at Kentucky, both on and off the court, were recognized, and athletic director Mitch Barnhart wished her and her family “the best in the future” in a press release.

With 10 losses in 13 games, including a season sweep at the hands of No. 1 South Carolina by an average of 55 points, the Wildcats were struggling towards the end of the season. With four straight losses by a margin of at least 14 points, Kentucky has struggled against other SEC opponents.
