The Indiana Fever have had a busy past eight days. On May 25, after losing five straight games, they returned home to learn that head coach Marianne Stanley had been fired. Assistant Carlos Knox took over as temporary head coach.

Due in part to the return of rookie forward NaLyssa Smith, who missed four games due to an ankle injury, the Fever handed Knox his first win two days later when Indiana defeated Los Angeles on Friday. And more news at the end of the weekend On Sunday,Due in part to the return of rookie forward NaLyssa Smith, who missed four games due to an ankle injury, the Fever handed Knox his first win two days later when Indiana defeated Los Angeles on Friday. More news came on Sunday, when Indiana announced the hiring of Gary Kloppenburg as an assistant coach. Kloppenburg was head coach of Seattle in 2020 when the Storm won the WNBA championship, and he had previously worked with the Fever twice (2008–11 and 2015–16).

The squad played a back-to-back on Tuesday at home against Washington and on Wednesday in New York against the Liberty, with the outcomes being practically identical in 87-75 and 87-74 losses at both venues. The team had one day to adjust to the latest developments.

With regard to the back-to-back, Knox stated, “We try to make sure that it’s not a big deal.” We want to be comfortable in our skin as a team mentally. We have conditioned our bodies and minds for this very moment because, as professional sportsmen, we are made for it.

These are only a few of the items we examined when we reviewed our schedule at the start of the year. It simply requires that we turn up and be prepared to work as a team.

Although the results and Indiana’s 3-9 record may not indicate much of a turnaround, recent remarks from Knox and his players suggest that the Fever, who wrapped their new coach with a group hug after their 101-96 victory over the Sparks last week, have a newfound sense of purpose.

Afterward, Knox remarked, “It was touching, it was humbling.” I was surrounded by many family members and people who valued my coaching skills. It felt so sweet that I became really emotional.

Guard Kelsey Mitchell commented on Knox’s transfer, saying, “I think for us, obviously a change in leadership, with no disrespect to Coach Marianne, because on Tuesday she was named the WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the first time in her career.”Although I really adore her, it was encouraging to watch him assume [the part] so quickly and for us to react accordingly.
