In the upcoming years, UConn women’s basketball might have a jersey number issue. Only the numbers 0–5 are permitted on college basketball jerseys to facilitate referees’ communication with the official scorer regarding which player committed a foul. Furthermore, there are even fewer alternatives because the Huskies have never distributed 00, 0 or 1.
So, what is the problem? UConn retired No. 50 in Rebecca Lobo’s honor following her induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. However, they may run out of alternatives if the school chooses to retire the number of every player inducted into Springfield.
Maya Moore ought to be inducted into the Hall of Fame along with Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi. Breanna Stewart, on the other hand, already has the recognition and only needs to play a little bit longer to accumulate those career totals. That would remove Nos. 3, 10, 23, and 30 from circulation and does not take into consideration the possibility of someone else (such as a current or former player) being elected to the Hall of Fame.
It’s a great problem to have, of course, and one that UConn would be pleased to solve.

Notables at No. 3: Aaliyah Edwards, Tiffany Hayes, Morgan Tuck, Megan Walker, and Diana Taurasi
No. 3 would still be very nice even if it were only worn by the best women’s basketball player of all time, Diana Taurasi. With three more All-Americans, six national champions overall, and an Olympian, this group may be the greatest in program history.
Debbie Baer, Maria Conlon, Caroline Doty, Crystal Dangerfield, and Paige Bueckers are the notables of No. 5.
No. 5 was meant for guards who were excellent but not quite All-American caliber until Paige Bueckers arrived. Three national championship teams featured Debbie Baer as a key player, Maria Conlon and Caroline Doty as vital supporting cast members, and three seasons of excellent floor management from Crystal Dangerfield. Currently, as one of the most well-known women’s basketball players at any level, Bueckers exudes enormous star power.
Notables for No. 10: Nika Mühl, Sue Bird, and Laura Lishness
Although Sue Bird is the most famous UConn player to have worn No. 10, Sue Bird was Laura Lishness before Sue Bird. Lishness, the floor general of the 1991 Final Four team, contributed to laying the groundwork for all subsequent program success. Bird is well-known, and no one hit No. 10 for 14 years following her graduation, until Molly Bent, a fan favorite, did so in 2016. She gave it to Nika Mühl, who plays for the Huskies right now and is widely believed to have a promising future.
No. 23: Notables: Willnett Crockett, Maya Moore, Azura Stevens, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, Rita Williams, and Swin Cash*
There are more good players on No. 23 than any other number in terms of volume. As for the other players, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis was an All-American, Willnett Crockett, Azura Stevens, Rita Williams, and Swin Cash (who wore 23 as a freshman) were all significant contributors during their time as Storrs. Of course, Maya Moore is a given. More UConn athletes than any other have actually donned the number 23.
