Sean McEwen, a national offensive lineman, has signed a two-year contract with the Calgary Stampeders, the team announced on Saturday.
McEwen played all 72 games as a starter for the Toronto Argonauts during the first four seasons of his CFL career. In 2017, the 26-year-old was recognized as an East Division Most Outstanding Lineman and a CFL All-Star. The native of Calgary won three of his four seasons as the team’s Most Outstanding Lineman.
“During his CFL career, Sean has played at an all-star level and is a durable player,” stated John Hufnagel, general manager of the Stampeders. “We admired him when he was a member of Dinos but unfortunately never had the opportunity to draft him because he was already taken by the time it was our turn to pick.”
McEwen was drafted by the Argos third overall in the 2015 Draft, having attended the University of Calgary.
“I am extremely excited and grateful for this opportunity,” McEwen stated. “The Stampeders are an organization I’ve admired and respected for so long, and I’m so glad I’ve been given a chance to be a part of it.”
Fraser Sopik, a special teams player and national linebacker, re-signed with the Calgary Stampeders on Friday.
Toronto-born Sopik, 24, made appearances in all 14 of the team’s games and tallied 13 special teams tackles in the previous year.
In a statement, Stampeders president and general manager John Hufnagel stated, “Fraser has developed into one of our key members of our special teams, and he’s also made contributions as a situational player on defense.” “We’re happy to have him back and excited about his future growth.”
Sopik, a Western product selected in the fourth round of the 2019 CFL Draft, has played in 32 games during the team’s regular season.
Sopik released a statement saying, “I’ve enjoyed my time and development as a player in Calgary since 2019.” “This organization and coaching staff are exceptional, and I’m excited to do everything in my power to help the team win the Grey Cup this coming season.”
Sopik’s career stats include two forced fumbles, a blocked kick, two sacks, 17 defensive stops, and 23 special teams tackles.
