Unbelievable, I can’t believe that a crucial member of the Tottenham team has been discovered deceased.
Following an illness, Terry Venables, the former manager of Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur, the English national football team, passed away at the age of 80, according to his family.
Before succumbing to Germany on penalties, Venables led England to the semifinals of the 1996 European Championship on home soil.
The family released a statement on Sunday saying, “We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness.”
During his illustrious managing career, he managed Crystal Palace, Leeds United, and Barcelona in addition to his tenure at Tottenham, where he won the FA Cup in the 1990–91 season.
Venables gained the moniker El Tel when playing at Barcelona, where he also won La Liga and advanced to the 1986 European Cup final. British attackers Gary Lineker and Mark Hughes were also brought to the Nou Camp by Venables.
“The best, most innovative coach that I had the privilege and pleasure of playing for,” Lineker, who also played under Venables at Spurs and England, wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“He was much more, though, than just a great manager, he was vibrant, he was charming, he was witty, he was a friend.”
