According to a family statement, Clive Barker, the effervescent coach who guided South Africa to victory in the Africa Cup of Nations and into its first World Cup final, passed away on Saturday.

Two years later, he managed the team’s qualification for the World Cup in France, though he was fired six months before the competition began.
Over the course of his 40-year career, Barker coached multiple clubs in South Africa’s top division of football, winning the league three times. In the 1970s, he broke apartheid restrictions to coach teams in the country’s black townships.
