Bryce Baringer was cut from the Michigan State team the following season, despite earning a walk-on berth in that year.

The punter knew he was the odd one out amid a numbers crunch, but he persisted in working out independently without giving up. Then, in February 2020, a few days before Mark Dantonio announced his retirement, Baringer received a call from the coach informing him that he had a spot available to rejoin the squad.

“That helped put a lot of things in perspective because who knows if I would still be sitting here if he hadn’t made that call?” Baringer stated on Tuesday.

Baringer may be the best punter in the country at his position, three years after he started punting by himself on the field used by Michigan State’s marching band. With 13 punt attempts, the sixth-year senior averages 53.0 yards per punt, seven of which are at least 50 yards long and four of which are downed inside the 20-yard line. In terms of punting average, he would lead the country, but he doesn’t have enough tries to be considered nationally.

Thankfully, everything has gone really well thus far, according to Baringer.

Baringer, an Illinois walk-on who didn’t play in 2017, is a graduate of Pontiac Notre Dame Prep. In order to avoid paying out-of-state tuition, he transferred to Michigan State, even though he wasn’t interested in playing football there. Baringer took part in walk-on trials, and his appearance resulted in a chance.
