who, in his six seasons as Oregon State’s head football coach, has raised the school to new heights, has been named Michigan State University’s 26th head football coach.

On Tuesday at 12 p.m., there will be a news conference on the MSU campus when Smith will be presented. The press conference will be webcast live on YouTube and broadcast live on the Big Ten Network. Additionally, live audio can be accessed at msuspartans.com.

Smith, who was recognized as the Pac-12 Co-Coach of the Year in 2022, turned Oregon State into one of the league’s best teams. He guided the Beavers, who entered the season ranked as high as 11th in the College Football Playoff rankings, to an 8-4 regular season record and their third consecutive bowl appearance—the program’s first since 2006–09. Under Smith, OSU has finished 25-13 the last three seasons, including a victory over Florida in the Las Vegas Bowl and a No. 17 ranking in 2022. He also served as offensive coordinator for Washington in the 2016 College Football Playoffs, giving him further coaching experience.

At a later meeting, the MSU Board of Trustees must formally approve the hiring.

Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Alan Haller of Michigan State remarked, “Today is an exciting day for Michigan State as we welcome Jonathan Smith, wife Candice, and children Robert, Bella, and Charles to our Spartan family.” “Jonathan has a track record of accomplishment; he started the Oregon State program from scratch and saw it through to historic, continuous success for the Beavers. He has coached in the College Football Playoffs, been a part of championship staffs, and learned from some of the most successful coaches in the history of the game what it takes to succeed at the top level.
