After activating Alex Neil’s buy-out clause from Sunderland, Stoke is about to name him their new manager.

Neil’s arrival may be made public prior to Stoke’s match against Blackburn tomorrow, following discussions between the club and the 41-year-old earlier today. Following a 1-0 loss to Sunderland the previous weekend, Stoke fired Michael O’Neill on Thursday.

Following training, Sunderland players had a team meeting where sporting director Kristjaan Speakman informed them of Neil’s departure. His leaving is said to have crushed many, even though others have subsequently called him.

It is acknowledged that Neil’s choice to quit Sunderland was influenced by his relationship with the founders of the company. Neil had a rolling one-year contract and was not presented with terms he would have preferred to sign. However, Neil made an impression during a complicated interview process, and when Keane withdrew his interest in February, he was given the job offer.

With just one victory so far this season, Stoke is barely outside the bottom three in the Championship standings, while Sunderland is now ranked fifth.

“Sunderland AFC can confirm that Alex Neil has entered into discussions with Stoke City regarding their current managerial vacancy,” stated a statement released by the club yesterday.

“The Club is contractually required to allow the Head Coach to initiate contact with the Potters after an official approach by SCFC.

“The Club is committed to retaining Alex’s services as Head Coach and will be making no further comment at this moment in time.”
