This week, the Giants were declared out of postseason contention, meaning they will miss the playoffs for the second straight year.

Apart from his 2021 award, Kapler’s unconventional approach both on and off the field marked his time in San Francisco. The 48-year-old fitness enthusiast, who has a blog of his own and is active on social media, is a native of Hollywood, California. In May 2022, ESPN named him “the most interesting man in baseball.” Additionally, Kapler has two Jewish tattoos on his legs: “Never Again,” an allusion to the Holocaust, is tattooed on his right leg, and a Jewish star is tattooed on his left.

In the midst of widespread Black Lives Matter demonstrations, Kapler became the first MLB manager to take a knee during the playing of the national anthem in 2020. Following the horrific mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, in 2022, Kapler declared he would start refusing to play the national anthem before games in protest of the “state of this country.” He regularly expressed his political views via the forum provided by the sport.

During his twelve-year major league career, Kapler played for six different clubs, mostly as a backup outfielder and part player. In the 2013 World Baseball Classic, Kapler served as coach and player for Team Israel following his retirement in 2010. He was previously employed by the Los Angeles Dodgers organization and managed the Philadelphia Phillies from 2018 to 2019.
