The head coach of Milwaukee Brewers has announce his leaving due to comingback of…
Pat Murphy, the bench coach for the Milwaukee Brewers, has been officially elevated to the position of manager. Less than a week after Craig Counsell left the franchise to join the Chicago Cubs, the team made the announcement on Wednesday morning. Longtime second baseman Rickie Weeks will be Murphy’s deputy manager, the Brewers recently announced.
Even if Murphy and Counsell are no longer together, their connections will endure.
At Maryville, where he was the head baseball coach and an assistant football coach, Murphy, 64, began his coaching career. Later, he was the head baseball coach at Notre Dame, where he worked with players including 1992 graduate and eventual World Series winner Counsell. After leading Notre Dame to victory in 1994, Murphy went on to lead Arizona State to victory in 1995–2009.
Murphy then became a special assistant to baseball operations with the Padres. Before taking over as the big-league team’s temporary manager on June 16, 2015, following Bud Black’s dismissal, he managed multiple times in the Padres’ minor-league system.
Murphy finished 42–54 in the remaining games before Andy Green was brought on by the Padres as a permanent employee for the 2016 campaign.
Murphy became a member of Counsell’s coaching staff in Milwaukee at that point. After taking over the Brewers in the 2015 season, Counsell reorganized the coaching staff in the offseason, making Murphy his go-to bench coach.
The Brewers, who finished 92-70 in 2023 and won the division for the second time in three years, will have to make important decisions on their future with Corbin Burnes and Willy Adames, two free agents who will become available after 2024. This offseason could be pivotal for the team.
