The Brewers have identified Craig Counsell’s replacement.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Pat Murphy will likely take over as manager of the Brewers.
Murphy was reportedly given a meaningful interview for the managing role prior to the Cubs hiring Counsell, as Matt Arnold informed reporters during last week’s GM Meetings.
Before the 2016 season, Murphy became Counsell’s bench coach when he joined the Brewers. At the University of Notre Dame, he was previously the Counsell coach.
Murphy was an Arizona State University coach as well. After that, he started working for the San Diego Padres as a Special Assistant to Baseball Operations. After the Padres fired Bud Black in the middle of the 2015 season, Murphy managed the Triple-A and Class A Short Season clubs for the team.
Murphy led the Padres to a 42–54 record before being fired by the team at the end of the campaign. Eight years later, he formally returns to a managerial position, though he did stand in for Counsell twice when he attended his kids’ high school graduations.
Weeks made his Brewers debut in September of 2003 after being selected with the second overall choice in the June Amateur Draft.
From 2005 until 2013, he was the starting second baseman for Milwaukee. In 2014, his final season with the Brewers, he batted on the short side of a platoon with Scooter Gennett.
During his 11-year tenure with the Brewers, Weeks amassed 18.6 fWAR, hit 148 home runs, and hit.249/.344/.420 (108 wRC+). In 2011, he was selected to the National League All-Star squad.
After playing for the Tampa Bay Rays, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Seattle Mariners, Weeks concluded his career in 2017. Before the 2022 campaign, he returned to the Brewers to help with player development.
Prior to the announcement of Counsell’s departure last week, the club elevated him to the position of special assistant; nevertheless, it now looks he will take his place in the dugout.
