ANAHEIM, California: The Los Angeles Angels confirmed on Monday that Phil Nevin will not be taking over as manager.

The move comes a day after the club finished the season at 73-89. The Angels didn’t schedule an end-of-the-season news conference with general manager Perry Minasian immediately after the season finale, raising questions about his future after three unsuccessful years in charge.

Minasian will be available to the media Tuesday, the team said.

The Angels officially announced that they had decided not to exercise their 2024 contract option for Nevin. After Mike Scioscia left the position after 19 years in charge, Los Angeles will be managed by a different person for the first time in six years.

The Angels entered “buyer” mode at the trade deadline after toying with the idea of making the playoffs this season. However, they dropped out of the race fast and put several of their new recruits on waivers.

Ultimately, Los Angeles’ deficit in the American League West and the wild-card race was 17 games, with the Astros leading the latter.

To end the season, the Angels defeated the Oakland Athletics 7-3 on Sunday.

“I know it didn’t go the way we wanted, but I’m proud of the way that room held together,” Nevin remarked on Sunday. “It was not enjoyable. Although our ending wasn’t enjoyable, the group is fantastic. With the young players and the guys returning, there are a ton of exciting things in store for us. a prosperous future.”

In his first major league managerial position, Nevin went 119-149 and failed to make the postseason in both of his seasons in charge. In the midst of a 14-game losing skid, Joe Maddon was sacked, and he was elevated to Angels manager in June 2022.

After taking a job as Maddon’s third-base coach in November 2021, Nevin became the first native of Orange County to manage the Angels.

Nevin seems to be well-liked by his teammates, a former all-star infielder who still plays the game like a ballplayer. However, the Angels failed to deliver a victory for him; following his takeover in 2022, they finished 46-60, and this season, they have recorded their eighth consecutive losing season.
