Heartbreak report: Alex Cobb s suspended due to the serious catastrophic injury

The Giants had just one starting pitcher under contract when they started the offseason not too long ago. It should have been impossible to find quality pitchers to fill every available rotation place, but they succeeded in doing so with pitchers who had largely outstanding seasons. Their sixth starter turned into the staff ace who gave them a chance to win in the postseason, and they went on to win 107 games. It served as a constant reminder that a rotation completed on October 31 will not be identical to one completed on April 1.

This is relevant right now because, come Opening Day, there will only be one starting pitcher for the Giants that gives you hope for the 2024 campaign. They had two before, but Alex Cobb will need surgery on his hip and won’t be ready for the start of the following season. Even while the news could be worse—we’re still discussing the possibility that he could be available in May—the Giants’ already difficult offseason just became more difficult. (To be clear, the Giants will definitely exercise Cobb’s 2024 team option. Failure to do so would constitute malpractice.

The depth chart as of right now:

1. The Logan Webb
2. Sean Manaea (who could decide not to)
3. Ross Stripling (who has the option, but chooses not to)
4. Anthony DeSclafani, who anticipates full recovery despite elbow issues
The fifth player, Kyle Harrison, wasn’t even born when the Giants visited Candlestick Park.

That’s not a bad start, but the cynical Giants fans among us will absolutely detest reading this. Not at all. Even though it would be difficult to go below Manaea, Stripling, and DeSclafani, I’ll take the over on their combined contributions for the upcoming season. For the benefit of both the team and Harrison, he must be included in the rotation to begin the season. There are five reliable starters, even without Cobb, and you
