Due to his wife’s critical remarks, the Hamilton Tiger Cats head coach has decided to end his…
Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced a significant reorganization plan on Tuesday, promoting Ed Hervey to general manager and removing Orlondo Steinauer from head coaching duties.
In December 2021, the Ticats added front-office responsibilities to Steinauer’s position as head coach, which he had held since 2019. He will continue to oversee the football operations division.
It was described by Steinauer as a “collective decision.”
Steinauer told reporters on Tuesday, “You don’t make a move like this if you’re not really sure the direction you want to go.” “Ultimately, it’s a different challenge.”
“The bottom line is that I am extremely in favour of this decision,” he stated. “I have no desire to be mediocre in any way. My goal is to excel in everything I do.
A new coach will be announced later this week, according to the Tiger-Cats.
In both 2019 and 2021, the Tiger-Cats were the Grey Cup finalists, but they were defeated by Winnipeg. In 2019, Steinauer was recognized as the CFL’s coach of the year.
In the East semifinals of the previous two seasons, Hamilton was defeated by Montreal.
In December 2021, Hamilton hired Hervey as an assistant general manager. He was the general manager of Edmonton for four seasons (2013–16) and Vancouver for two seasons (2018–19).
Hervey led Edmonton to victory in the 2015 Grey Cup.
When Steinauer worked with Hervey, “it became very apparent to me why he’s been entrusted to run two different organizations,” the statement read. “He’s made big decisions, he’s run drafts, he’s run day-to-day operations, and he just has that experience.”
Adding, “I feel like we have three GMs in house,” he mentioned assistant general managers Drew Allemang and Spencer Zimmerman.
The football operations team, Hervey, and Steinauer have a busy off-season ahead of them in Hamilton. Bo Levi Mitchell, a veteran quarterback who signed a three-year, $1.62 million contract with the Ticats, is uncertain about his future after being limited by injuries in his first season as a star player for the Calgary Stampeders.
Sometime in January, Mitchell is expected to receive a sizable six-figure roster bonus. If Hamilton chooses not to pay that, Mitchell will become a free agent.
Receivers Tim White, veteran linebacker Simoni Lawrence, and quarterbacks Matt Shiltz and Kai Locksley are among the players who will be available for free agency.
“There’s some other decisions that have to come down the line, and then we have to focus on what the core of our roster starts to look like,” Hervey stated. “You get to choose the composition of the roster once our coaching staff and all of the players are in place.
We’ll just go line-by-line through that, whether it’s free agents that we want, who we want to keep in-house, or how we draft. Additionally, that will present us with a chance to assemble the roster we desire.”
