Unbelivable: Former head coach for Calgary Flames, Darryi Sutter, has announced his return to the team

Head coach Darryl Sutter of the Calgary Flames has been let go, the team announced on Monday.

The team’s decision was made after they finished the regular season with a 37-28-17 record and were unable to qualify for the playoffs.

On Monday morning, the team verified the information.

In a statement, CSEC president and CEO John Bean said, “On behalf of ownership and all Calgary Flames fans, we want to thank Darryl for his cumulative years of service to the Calgary Flames and to the community at large.”

Sutter coached the Flames for the second time this season.

He is the most recent name to have left the team since general manager Brad Treliving’s announcement of his departure in mid-April (opens in a new tab).

On April 17, Maloney stated in a press conference that Treliving departed the Flames “for his reasons.”

Until a replacement can be found, Don Maloney is acting in the capacity of interim general manager.

“A NEW VOICE”
Maloney stated on Monday that a review of the season led to Sutter’s exit.

Interviews with players, coaches, and other Calgary Flames employees are part of that process.

“It became clear to me that we needed a new voice to guide us forward,” he stated. “Darryl is a good coach and an experienced coach, one of the finest we’ve had behind the bench and doing the best job he could do.”

But in the absence of victory, Maloney claimed that dismissing Sutter “was the best way to proceed.”

Given that Sutter’s exit happened so soon after Treliving’s resignation, some reporters wondered if the two events were related.

They weren’t, according to Maloney.

“It was unrelated to the other. Brad made the decision that they would both part ways, he said. “He’s a good man, he’ll find a job when he wants to get back into hockey.”

Maloney says that once the Flames have identified a candidate to succeed Treliving as general manager, the search will proceed “full steam ahead.” No information has been provided regarding the potential replacement.

“You hire a GM who hires a coach and coaching staff,” he stated. “We have lots of time, it’s May 1, we’re not dropping the puck anytime soon.”

Maloney says he’s “got some names together,” but he’s not at all ready to divulge more at this time.

“Hiring a manager is the first step; they have the vision for how we should play to win. Finding a coach who shares that vision is the next step.”
