The native of Louisville helped elevate Purdue as their head coach in addition to being a standout quarterback for the Cardinals as an assistant coach.
The University of Louisville Athletic Association gave its approval on Thursday for Jeff Brohm, a former head coach of Purdue and Cardinal, to take over as the team’s next leader.
“This decision says we’re committed to competing at the highest level, and our university leadership will invest to insure our students are surrounded by the very best,” stated Josh Heird, the athletic director at the University of Louisville, during a press conference held at Cardinal Stadium’s Angel’s Envy Bourbon Club to introduce Brohm.
“As I’ve had conversations with board members, it’s clear there’s a commitment to making sure this university thrives academically and athletically,” Heird said. “These are not mutually exclusive; we plan to be great in both, and together, this is the best way to elevate this entire university.”
As a head coach, Brohm is 66-44 overall, with 36-34 at Purdue and 30-10 at Western Kentucky. Raised in Louisville, Brohm played quarterback for the Cardinals under Howard Schnellenberger from 1989 to 1993. He also served as an assistant coach under Steve Kragthorpe and Bobby Petrino from 2003 to 2008.
“Being up here is definitely a humbling experience. I look forward to the years ahead and I take this job very seriously,” Brohm remarked.

“Good afternoon, Nation of Cards. I appreciate your patience. We get to commemorate yet another important turning point in the University of Louisville’s history. I’d like to extend greetings from our governor, Andy Beshear, before I start.
“Today is a great day for the University of Louisville as Jeff Brohm is coming home to the Commonwealth,” he writes, extending his best wishes. In addition to being a fantastic coach, Britainy and I would like to personally welcome him and his family.
We also know that he will be a great member of our Louisville, Kentucky, community. That comes from the governor, then. I would like to express my gratitude to all of the supporters who have come to support the University of Louisville Athletics.
I would like to express my gratitude to the media present for their ongoing interest in Cardinal Athletics. We are happy to have donors and supporters in the room, as you are the cornerstone of our student athletes’ success. We are really pleased with these athletes.
They embody what true student athletes stand for and wear the red and black with pride. As you are aware, athletics plays a vital role in campus life and enables us to fulfill our mission of changing the world.
Our capacity to produce new generations of University of Louisville fans and graduates is still shaped by the Cardinal legacy. Football matters here at the University of Louisville, just as athletics do. Five days ago, Josh Heird called to let me know that our former football coach was having an interview at another school.
We talked about his next steps. He moved quickly to put this plan into action, and to no one’s surprise, he carried it out flawlessly. We have the perfect candidate now that we have decided on the strategy. We are pleased to introduce to you today our newest head coach, a Cardinal, and another native son.
Josh will be the one to share our coach’s accomplishments and accolades with you, but let me just add that because he is one of us and is from here, he is more than just the coach. Because he is precisely what Louisville needs right now, he is the coach. He agrees with our principles and our football team’s vision. He is an accomplished athlete who has grown in skill and morality.
He is a real Cardinal, and it was a huge plus that he arrived here without the need for directions. In closing, I would like to express our gratitude to Josh and his team for their outstanding work, the Board of Trustees, the Louisville Athletic Association for their ongoing support, and President-Elect Schatzel, who we are so grateful happened to have here this week when this major event occurred. Now let us formally welcome Josh Heird, our incredible Director of Athletics, as our new head football coach.
