On July 7, 2023, the Swede agreed to a one-year, $800,000 contract with the Penguins.

On October 10, 2020, the Toronto Maple Leafs traded Johnsson, 28, to New Jersey in exchange for Joey Anderson.

Following training camp, he was assigned to New Jersey’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate after failing to make the 2022–23 roster. Johnsson was sent by New Jersey to the San Jose Sharks on February 26, 2023, as a part of the Timo Meier trade package. As a Devil, he made 123 appearances and scored 46 points (18 goals, 28 assists).

After training camp, the winger was not added to the Penguins roster and was traded to the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for the 2023–24 season.

“Johnsson appeared in an AHL preseason game with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton but was then referred to as ‘away from the team tending to a personal matter’ since the beginning of the regular season,” according to Tony Androckitis of Inside AHL Hockey.
