Following Stephen Crichton’s admission earlier in the year of a handshake deal with coach Ivan Cleary, which his new manager is now disputing, the drama surrounding Crichton’s future is expected to get even more intense.
In The Sun Herald on Sunday, Danny Weidler, a colleague at Nine, wrote that Crichton’s new management company, headed by agent Sam Ayoub, was “bemused to say the least” about an alleged $1.5 million handshake deal that this column had disclosed a few weeks prior.

The club is being threatened by the very idea of the handshake agreement; according to Weidler’s report on Sunday, “the more that is suggested, the greater the chance there could be a problem.”
However, unbeknownst to Ayoub and unpublished beforehand, Crichton was specifically asked if he had vowed to honor the deal Penrith put forward mid-season, which wasn’t signed off on as a courtesy from the club to allow the 20-year-old to leave his former manager Mark Stewart in November. This was during grand final week in an interview with The Herald.
“I’ve heard you say, ‘I’m not going to change my mind, a deal is a deal,’ after shaking hands with Ivan. a spoken understanding. Is that accurate? On October 18, the Herald asked Crichton.
“Yeah, yeah,” Crichton answered, then made a suggestion that he would throw out the contract. “I’m just trying to figure out what’s best for my family and me, especially since I’m the only one who can support my parents and pay the bills at home. My goal is to secure a favorable agreement that will relieve my parents of their employment obligations.
