Despite an unimpressive season, the Guardians have surged back into AL Central contention; however, manager Terry Francona’s health scare presents a new challenge.

Tuesday night’s series opener between the Royals and Cleveland was Francona’s absence; bench coach DeMarlo Hale filled in.

In his eleventh season with the Guardians, the 64-year-old manager—currently holding the record for the longest tenure in baseball—has faced a number of health challenges over the years. While he missed extended time the previous two years, he was able to finish the 2022 season without missing any games, helping Cleveland win the AL Central and Manager of the Year.

Uncertainty regarding the manager’s position may suddenly become another challenge for the Guardians as they try to save their season.

According to The Guardians, Francona has been told to take a “day or two” off and will not be managing Wednesday night’s game against the Royals.

Thankfully, lightheadedness was identified as Francona’s ailment, and according to the Guardians, all of his test results were “within normal ranges.”

The Guardians announced on Tuesday night that Francona wasn’t feeling well before the game and would be getting precautionary testing at a hospital in Kansas City, but they didn’t provide many other details.
