We Must Have Him Back: Ajax Amsterdam’s Owner Said…
Edwin van der Sar has resigned from his role as Ajax’s chief executive officer and revealed the ‘incredibly tough period’ that led to the decision.
The former Manchester United goalkeeper had spent seven years in the position, since his appointment in 2016, before opting to leave on Tuesday morning.
Given their long-standing supremacy, it was not the season that many fans anticipated, especially since they ultimately lost out on Champions League football for the following season.
Van der Sar stated, “After nearly eleven years on the board, I am exhausted,” in a statement to the club website. It’s been a really difficult time, but we’ve also experienced some very pleasant things.
For everything we have accomplished and gone through together, I am incredibly appreciative of the people I met and worked with throughout my second career at Ajax. It’s time for me to step back, unwind, and pursue other interests.
“Having to make decisions regarding this beautiful club’s future in the upcoming period doesn’t feel good.” That’s why I’ve decided to stop now.
The former United goalkeeper has been under fire recently as Ajax has performed poorly on the field and finished in third place.
It was their lowest league showing in thirteen years, and it was the first time since 2008–09 that they had missed out on the Champions League.
Even though they signed ten players during the season, including Calvin Bassey and Steven Bergwijn, they came in significantly behind Feyenoord, the champions.
Furthermore, van der Sar had previously encountered criticism with the dismissals of head coach Erik ten Hag and director of football Marc Overmars.
