In the opening leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup against Nashville SC on Thursday, Inter Miami secured a dramatic 2-2 draw thanks to goals from Lionel Messi in the second half and Luis Suarez in stoppage time.
Just seven months have passed since Miami defeated Nashville in the League Cup Final on penalties, and this match featured all the makings of another tournament classic: intense suspense, a very close call from the VAR, and in the end, the greatest players coming through in the big moments.
Despite his goal, Messi’s night appeared to be marred by frustration as he battled with opponent Anibal Godoy in the second half, complained to the referee, and survived a late injury scare.
However, Suarez, his buddy and teammate, headed in an equalizer from Sergio Busquets in the 95th minute, giving Miami a significant away goal advantage going into the second leg.
