The biggest names in basketball are assembling in Salt Lake City for the yearly NBA showcase during All Star Weekend.

Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and the Celtics coaching staff—which is helmed by recently appointed head coach Joe Mazzulla—are part of that group this season. Here are five things to know about the coach, who in his short time as interim head coach has gotten the Celtics off to a great start.

After Ime Udoka, who had just guided the team to the NBA Finals in his first season as head coach, was suspended by the league, the Celtics designated Mazzulla their interim head coach. Udoka was suspended due to a reported inappropriate interaction he had with a member of the Boston Celtics organization. A team may face difficulties as a result of any abrupt relocation, but the fact that it happened just before training camp began did not help matters.

When Mazzulla received the emergency call, he had been a member of the Celtics coaching staff since 2019.

Although there are undoubtedly more effective methods to take the helm of a team than doing so in the midst of a crisis, Mazzulla and the Celtics didn’t lose a step. The club has quickly become the best in the NBA overall with a 42-17 record thus far.
