David Ross is still working through the emotions and ideas surrounding his firing by the Chicago Cubs.

The Tallahassee native is appreciative of the chance to oversee the team for four seasons, though. While he works through the feelings from Monday’s unexpected turn that shocked the baseball world, he is also looking forward to the future, both personally and professionally.

After firing Ross, the Cubs acquired former Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell for a record-breaking $40 million over five years.

“I think the thing that strikes me is how grateful I am for the chance to be able to be in an exclusive interview with the Tallahassee Democrat on Thursday, an emotional Ross said.

Many individuals put in a great deal of work alongside me. I sincerely appreciate the four years I had, as I went from having no coaching experience to being able to oversee such a fantastic organization, which had a profoundly positive influence on my life. There are wonderful people there. To be honest, I don’t have many bad things to say.

“I have a lot to be thankful for, but I get angry sometimes.”

Ross was carefully chosen to succeed Joe Maddon as manager of the Cubs in 2019. As a player, Ross assisted in leading the team to its first World Series championship in 2016.

With the Cubs, 46-year-old Ross went 262-284, winning the 2020 NL Central.

This season, they came back from being 10 games below.500 in the middle of the summer, but they faltered in the closing stages of a close NL wild-card race behind division winner Milwaukee.
