Unbe lievable: Misunderstanding has resulted in the suspension of New York Islanders head coach

After New York finished the regular season with a 37-35-10 record, missing the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Trotz was fired. The Islanders hadn’t missed the playoffs since 2017–18, which was a first.

As reported by the Associated Press, team president and general manager Lou Lamoriello stated during a conference call, “To say this was not an easy decision would be a tremendous understatement.” Regretfully, it is my responsibility to decide what is best for the company. This group of players, in my opinion, needs a fresh voice.

Lamoriello would not elaborate on why he thought the team needed a fresh perspective. He did, however, clarify that players were not consulted before the transfer.

Trotz was still bound to his contract for another year.

Under Trotz’s leadership, the Isles finished 115-67-24 and qualified for the playoffs each year. Trotz’s Islanders advanced all the way to the Eastern Conference final in each of the following two seasons after losing in the second round of the 2019 playoffs. However, the Islanders’ losses to the eventual winners, the Tampa Bay Lightning, prevented New York from making it to its first Stanley Cup Final since 1983–84.
