Morsy played a total of 218 games for Cook in League Two, League One, and the Championship. With Chesterfield and Wigan, he assisted the coach in winning two league titles and making it to the 2014 EFL Trophy final.

After assuming the captain’s role, Morsy has started six games since joining Ipswich and has been leading the team on the field.

When asked if Morsy would take over as the tractor boys’ permanent captain, Cook acknowledged the development but said the Egyptian had always held that position.

“Sam has always been and will always be the club captain. He’s a former player for me,” Cook remarked.

“Now is the moment for Sam, Lee, and every one of our players to step up and shine. We have nothing to fear at this club, so there’s no fear for us. Every week, we have 20,000 home supporters in addition to a (very good) traveling squad.

“Now is the moment for our boys to embrace their true selves and take on the responsibilities.”

After being called up to the preliminary squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Libya, Morsy will now be looking to rejoin the Egyptian national team before being removed from the final roster.
