The formidable player and star of the Orioles, who was initially listed as not for sale, was eventually sold for an incredible sum of money—billions.
Multiple reports, citing sources with direct knowledge of the negotiations, have stated that Baltimore Orioles owner John Angelos has agreed to sell the baseball team to a group that includes private equity billionaires David Rubenstein and Michael Arougheti in a deal valued at $1.7 billion.
The Orioles had a 101-61 record at the end of the 2023 campaign.
The Baltimore Banner stated that Rubenstein, a co-founder of the Carlyle Group, would take on the role of “control person” for the team. The investing group also comprises notable sports figures and benefactors from Maryland and Arougheti, including the renowned former Orioles star Cal Ripken Jr.
According to the banner, Rubenstein and Arougheti will own roughly 40% of the team and will buy out Angelos’ remaining ownership after his passing.
“We will work together to return a World Series trophy to the City of Baltimore,” tweeted Rubenstein. “To the supporters, I say this: without you, we couldn’t do what we do for you. I appreciate your help.
Arougheti’s net worth is estimated to be $1.8 billion, whereas Rubenstein’s is $3.7 billion. They are both co-founders of companies that oversee hundreds of billions of dollars in assets.
