The West Tigers have recently nominated a new head coach among their team players who will be their head coach in the next two to three days.

The West Tigers will name a new head coach over the next two to three days. The player nominees were announced yesterday.
Benji Marshall (Ngāi Tūhoe), one of Aotearoa’s finest rugby league stars, is about to fulfill another significant professional aspiration with the announcement that he will take over as head coach of the Wests Tigers in 2024.

As part of a plan Tigers manager Justin Pascoe said was intended to get “Wests Tigers DNA surging through the club,” Marshall, 38, was initially expected to succeed Tim Sheens in 2025. However, he will now step into the legendary coach’s shoes ahead of schedule after the team announced on Wednesday that Sheens would step down by “mutual agreement” at the end of this season.

After retiring from competition, Marshall remarked, “Becoming the head coach of the Wests Tigers has been a long-held dream of mine.” Marshall played 257 first-grade games for the Sydney team.

“I am really appreciative of the chance to assume this position, and I owe Tim a debt of gratitude for everything he taught me as a player and an assistant coach.”

Marshall made his NRL debut in 2003 under Sheens, who has four NRL premierships to his credit, the most recent one coming in 2005 with the Tigers.

“I wish Benji and the club all the success in the future, and I am incredibly proud of what I was able to do in moving him into the main role,” he remarked.

With three victories in 21 games, the Tigers sit at the very bottom of the NRL standings.
