Sad news: Due to his wife, The coach of the knicks has officially announced his retirement
In as many seasons, Thibodeau would be the team’s fourth coach. After David Fizdale was fired in December, Mike Miller was named interim head coach; he would take over for him.
Thibodeau joined the Knicks staff in 1996 to serve as Jeff Van Gundy’s assistant.
He was hired by the Chicago Bulls as head coach for the first time in 2010. After matching the record for the most wins by a rookie head coach with 62, he was named Coach of the Year in 2011.
2015 saw Thibodeau fired as a result of growing hostilities between Chicago’s front office and himself. A year later, he was rumored to be in line for the then-open Knicks job, but he ultimately decided to take the Minnesota Timberwolves’ head coach and president of basketball operations post instead. In January, Minnesota fired Thibodeau.
Thanks in large part to his tenure as coach of the 2008 NBA Champion Boston Celtics, Thibodeau would arrive in New York with a reputation as a defensive-minded coach. But during his tenure, the Timberwolves routinely finished in the lower half of the league in a number of defensive metrics.
Before the coronavirus forced the NBA to halt their season in March, the Knicks were 21-45 this season.
