At the 2023 Miami Grand Prix, Max Verstappen beat Sergio Perez. Everyone saw this at the time, but Christian Horner has now confirmed it in an interview with Motorsport.com.

Perez was in good form heading into the 2023 Formula 1 season after four Grand Prix. In the race for the world championship, the Mexican came within a hair’s breadth of Max Verstappen despite winning two races. Everything appeared to be going well until the Miami Grand Prix, when the Mexican even declared his intention to win the world championship.

Perez had a significant advantage in Q3, as Verstappen did not set a time. The Red Bull driver took the lead off the starting grid and

“I think losing that race in Miami was a big psychological blow for him,” Red Bull Racing’s team manager stated following the season. “Confidence is such a vital thing in this sport, and I think that that momentum that he built up—because his races in Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan were truly outstanding—was hit.”

Perez would go on to lose every race after the hit in Miami and would ultimately trail Verstappen by a significant margin in the world championship. Even so, Perez placed second in the drivers’ standings, giving Red Bull Racing its first-ever 1-2 in that championship.
