Major League Baseball suspended José Alvarado of the Philadelphia Phillies for three games on Sunday for starting a brawl that resulted in the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies bench clearing.
Along with pitcher Miguel Castro and outfielder Dominic Smith of the Mets, Alvarado also received an undisclosed fine for their roles in two heated altercations that occurred on Friday night in Philadelphia.

After striking out Smith on Friday in the eighth inning to end a threat, Alvarado thumped his glove, pointed, and yelled at Smith. As the benches and bullpens emptied, Smith pulled off his helmet, Alvarado threw his glove to the ground, and tensions between the two erupted. There were no punches exchanged and both players were restrained.
Later in the game, Castro became heated as a result of two inside pitches that caused Rhys Hoskins to walk and caught the Philadelphia first baseman’s eye directly. The game was briefly halted by players spilling onto the field, but Castro was soon calmed down by teammates.
Philadelphia managed to hold on and win 2-1.
