In the Algarve sunshine, Ducati rider Bagnaia cruised to victory ahead of Aprilia’s Maverick Vinales, extending his lead from the first-ever sprint in MotoGP.
On the third lap, Marquez wrecked and eliminated home favorite Miguel Oliveira, making room for Bagnaia to begin his championship defense with a flawless start.
Bagnaia finishes the first race of the 21-race season with a maximum of 37 points from Portimao.
“My team and I wanted that start,” the Italian said to motogp.com. “We can’t continue in this manner.”
Then, following Saturday’s 12-lap race, he made a joke.
Compatriot Marco Bezzecchi of Bagnaia completed the podium by finishing third on a Ducati VR46 bike.
While it was relatively easy for the world champion, Marquez had quite the opposite experience.
The afternoon’s main drama came from a rare moment of madness on the part of the Spaniard.
The Portuguese rider, who had great expectations of finishing on the podium in front of his home supporters, was eliminated when the pole sitter clipped Jorge Martin and then crashed his uncontrollably driven Honda into the back of Oliveira’s KTM.
After returning to the pits, Marquez was met with hostility from some of the fans. He hastily went to Oliveira’s garage to apologize.
The six-time past world champion also reportedly sustained a possible fracture to his hand.
With six laps remaining, Martin finally lost the race due to an uphill battle to recover.
After a rapid start from the second row on the grid, Oliveira briefly took the lead before Bagnaia surged ahead just before Marquez intervened.
Vinales was encouraged by his season’s early promise.
“I feel good. I knew that ‘Pecco’ (Bagnaia) had a little bit more pace, so I lost the opportunity to pass.” “We are going to fight in the front, which actually makes me really happy.”
