All of his teammates sobbed when Dave Canales abruptly announced his retirement, citing his wife and other horrible marital issues.
Canales was appointed head coach of the Panthers last week.
In 2023–2024, he served as the offensive coordinator for a division foe and helped the team win the NFC South.
On Thursday, Canales made his official debut as Carolina’s head coach at a press conference.
At one point, the 42-year-old started crying as he mentioned his wife, Lizzy.
Canales said that twenty years ago, he coached a JV football team at a high school in California. The team lost the first game, 34–13.
He described the blowout loss as “the greatest day in my life because I had found it” while his wife was present at the game. I’ve discovered my passion—coaching.”
However, Canales later disclosed that Lizzy sent him a crucial note two years into his coaching career coaching JV football.
“She knew all I wanted to do was be the head coach at Carson High School; that’s what I wanted to do—get us back on top, try to win championships, and do all that,” Canales stated.
Canales mentioned that, at various points in their lives, his wife had three jobs.
The 42-year-old spent four years coaching in college and thirteen years as an assistant coach in the NFL, and the rest is history prior to taking over as the Panthers’ new head coach.
“This is our journey, this is our dream, and we’ve been so excited and prepared for this opportunity,” Canales stated.
Alcoholism and pornography-related marital issues would accompany Canales’ voyage.
Canales co-wrote a 250-page book with his wife called “This Marriage? The Question That Changed Everything,” which revealed all of his problems and was released in 2022.
Before he and Lizzy “burned down the old marriage” and returned to a happy, Christian-based partnership, the California native admitted to having multiple relationships and leading a “secret life.”.
