Don deal: After years of waiting, the Minnesota United have welcomed a crucial player.
Doneil Henry, a defender for Canada’s international team, was purchased by Minnesota United today after going off waivers.
After rejoining Toronto FC in July 2022 after beginning the season with LAFC, Henry becomes a member of MNUFC. The center-back has spent nine years in Major League Soccer, making 114 appearances during the regular season, playing about 8,600 minutes, and scoring six goals.
Notably, Henry signed with Toronto as the league’s first-ever homegrown player in 2010, and he played professionally there for his first five years of play from 2010 to 2014. Henry played a key role in the Reds’ three consecutive Canadian Championship victories in 2010–2011 and 2012 during those four seasons. During the 2018 and 2019 seasons, the Canadian defender played for the Vancouver Whitecaps, assisting the team in reaching the
Finals of the 2018 Canadian Championship. The 29-year-old has experience both domestically and abroad, having played for the Suwon Samsung Bluewings of the Korean K-League, West Ham United of the English Premier League, Blackburn Rovers of the English Championship, and AC Horsens of the Danish Superliga, among other teams and leagues.
Henry has received 44 caps for the senior Canadian National Team abroad thus far. He has also played for Canada at the U20 and U23 levels. In 2012, he won the Player of the Year award for the U20 squad in Canada.
In the Concacaf Final Round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, Henry was a member of the senior team that placed first overall, advancing Canada to its first FIFA World Cup in thirty-six years. Henry was added to the roster of the Men’s National Team of Canada for
