SAN PAUL — Next season, Wil Trapp, the captain of Minnesota United, will be back.
According to a source who spoke with the Pioneer Press this summer, the Loons defensive midfielder’s 2022 contract included a clause that would force him to return in 2023 if the ten-year veteran accrued a specific amount of playing time.
After reaching that goal, the 29-year-old native of Ohio will play for MNUFC again the following season for the third time. Trapp had guaranteed compensation of $784,875 in 2022, per MLS Players’ Association figures. Under the salary budget set by the league, that is a larger amount.
Throughout the course of 27 regular-season games (26 starts), Trapp played 2,127 minutes. Throughout the course of the season, he nearly doubled the number of yellow cards he had received in his career and wore the captain’s armband for 26 games.
