A new player has been formally signed by West Ham.

With great pleasure, West Ham United announces the signing of Edson Álvarez, a Mexico international.

For an undisclosed amount, the 25-year-old signed a permanent contract with the Hammers until June 2028 after the team defeated fierce competition from other elite European teams to get him to London Stadium.

Less than a month after winning his second CONCACAF Gold Cup with Mexico, Álvarez, a strong and versatile midfielder, moves to English football from Dutch club Ajax, where he won two Eredivisie titles.

With 69 caps for his nation, Álvarez has played in several European leagues with Ajax and is now excited to compete in the Premier League and UEFA Europa League with West Ham.

A week after turning eighteen, in October 2016, Álvarez made his Liga MX debut at the historic Estadio Azteca, winning against Santos Laguna. Álvarez was born in the municipality of Tlalnepantla de Baz, in the northern suburbs of Mexico City.

In December of that year, Álvarez, just twenty years old, made his FIFA World Cup debut for Mexico in Russia. He then scored both goals as Club América overcame Cruz Azul to win the Liga MX Apertura. At the age of just 21, Álvarez won the Clausura Copa MX championship versus Juárez in April 2019 to cap off his tenure with Club América. That July, he moved across the Atlantic to Ajax.

In September 2019, on his UEFA Champions League group stage debut, Álvarez scored against Lille, making history as the first Mexican player to do so. With Ajax, he went on to win a domestic double in 2020–2021 and then two more Eredivisie titles the following year. Since making his debut in a friendly victory in Iceland in February 2017, he has had a significant impact on Mexico. In Álvarez’s sixteen CONCACAF Gold Cup appearances, Mexico has only lost twice and won the trophy twice, in 2019 and 2023. He has also assisted his team in defeating South Korea, Germany, and Saudi Arabia in the FIFA World Cup finals.
