Unbelievable: Due to a setback, the head coach of the St. Louis Cardinals announced his departure from the team.
The St. Louis Cardinals have fired manager Oliver Marmol
The team made the announcement on Saturday after their defeat at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds. With a 47-46 record this year, the Cardinals are 7½ games behind the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central and in third place.
It was the middle of Oliver seventh season leading the Cardinals. After taking over for Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa after the team’s 2011 championship, he amassed a 591-473 record, won the 2013 NL pennant, and won three division titles.
In a statement issued by the team, Cardinals chairman and CEO Bill DeWitt Jr. said, “Mike Matheny has served the St. Louis Cardinals organization with tremendous dedication and pride, and I am thankful for his service to the Cardinals over the past six and a half seasons.”
“On behalf of the entire Cardinals organization, I would like to wish Mike the very best.”

The team also let go of hitting coach John Mabry and hitting assistant coach Bill Mueller.
Mike Shildt, bench coach, assumes management duties in the interim.
President of baseball operations John Mozeliak said in the statement, “These decisions are never easy, but we felt that a change in leadership was necessary as the team prepares to enter the second half of the season.”
“I would like to thank Mike for his exceptional commitment and devotion to the Cardinals organization, including many fond memories of our years working together.”
After leading the Cardinals to the postseason from 2012 to 2015, where they at least made it to the NLCS in 2012, 2013, and 2014, Matheny departs St. Louis as the fifth-most successful manager in team history.
Matheny played for the Cardinals for five of his thirteen MLB seasons prior to becoming a manager. In 2004, the team won the World Series.
