The all-time player for the Penrith Panthers has consistently recommended to the head coach that the team add a striker to help them accomplish their goals.
Charlie Staines, a winger for Penrith, is optimistic that his play and form this season will be sufficient to compel the Panthers to include him in their long-term plans.
At the end of 2020, Staines signed a huge contract worth an estimated $500,000 a year, but he has since struggled to establish himself as a first-grade regular.
When he signed the contract, the Samoan international was considered a key member of the Panthers’ defense, but since Taylan May became available, he has been relegated to the bench.
In lieu of a suspended May, Staines participated in the preliminary final matchup against the Rabbitohs. Due to a hamstring injury sustained in the Grand Final, Staines was granted an additional opportunity to play.
Staines expressed optimism in an interview with the AAP that he will have more time in Penrith and that playing in the NSW Cup will increase his chances of getting back into the first grade.
“I’m a Penrith Panthers player right now, and I have a contract for next year as well,” Staines stated.
“Ivan Cleary just wanted me to go out and be the best player every week and play some good footy at fullback (in the NSW Cup).”
“Playing Cup has been beneficial to me, and I want to carry that form into first grade when I get the chance. I’ve been accumulating a respectable number of games under my belt.
“It seems like I’ve been doing well every time I’ve taken a step this year.
“I had a strong debut, but I knew I wasn’t going to score four tries every game.
“This year, I’ve concentrated more on trying to play good football and work on the other aspects of my game; the opportunities will present themselves.” There was no pressure on me to be truthful.
“It was amazing to be in the group when they won last year, and I have a great opportunity here.”
The Panthers may decide to look to cut Staines’ contract in order to retain players like Liam Martin and Brian To’o.
