According to authorities, a Chrysler 300 is suspected of speeding through a red light and colliding with an SUV early on Saturday, killing six people, including D J Hayden, 33.

He was a member of the Washington Commanders in 2021 most recently. Having excelled at the University of Houston, he was born and raised in Houston.

Around two in the morning local time (8 in the UK time), a crash in central Houston claimed the lives of five men and one woman.

Three former football players from the university have passed away: Ralph Oragwu, Hayden’s former teammate, cornerback Zach McMillian, and him. An additional former college football player sustained injuries.

“The entire University of Houston community is heartbroken over the tragic passing of former football student-athletes D J Hayden, Zachary McMillian and Ralph Oragwu earlier today, and our thoughts and prayers remain with Jeffery Lewis in his recovery ahead,” the University of Houston Athletics department said in a statement.

“Three individuals who made an indelible impact on each life they touched” were described as the men who passed away.

According to police, the victims included the man who appeared to be homeless and the driver of the Chrysler.

The statement from the Las Vegas Raiders, who were formerly the Oakland Raiders, read, “D J’s courage, perseverance, and dedication to his teammates will be fondly remembered by everyone who knew him.”

“The prayers of the entire Raider Nation are with D J’s loved ones at this time,” they stated.

The Chrysler “looks to be traveling very fast, high velocity,” Assistant Chief Megan Howard of the Houston Police Department said.

At the scene, four people were officially declared dead.

According to Ms. Howard, after four more were brought to the hospital, two of them passed away and a female passenger was critically injured, possibly to the point of death.

Police reported that they had spoken with a male passenger in the SUV and that detectives were trying to figure out who was driving the vehicle.

When Hayden collided with a teammate during practice in 2012, he tore a major vein near his heart and narrowly avoided death.

After receiving emergency surgery, he was only hospitalized for a week before being chosen in the 2013 draft by the Oakland Raiders.
