Smart’s departure from Boston
After nine successful years in the city, Smart said goodbye to Celtics fans for the first time since the trade.

He tweeted, “I came to Boston as a naive kid from Dallas not really knowing what to expect.” According to Sports Illustrated, “all I knew was the kind of work ethic my momma instilled in me and I was going to work my asshole off and make sure I EARNED the respect of every single fan in Boston.”

Following a turbulent 2022–2023 season that ended with a six-game series loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the NBA playoffs, Smart joins a Memphis Grizzlies team that is in desperate need of veteran leadership.

Superstar Grizzlies player Ja Morant faced a 25-game suspension in the 2003–24 season due to significant off-court problems. The team was also sidetracked by Dillon Brooks’ antics.
