Just in: Robert Saleh has learned of the horrific accident that claimed the life of one of his valuable players.
Mike White’s toughness was known to the New York Jets. The NFL as a whole does now. After New York’s 20-12 loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Jets quarterback was sent to the hospital.
Shortly after the game, Jets head coach Robert Saleh informed reporters during his post-game press conference that White had taken an ambulance to the hospital for assessment.
More than anything, Saleh said, it’s a precaution.
White hurt his ribs after taking multiple hard hits from the Bills. Twice in the second half, he left the field for short periods of time and went to the locker room, only to come back and wince at the hits that followed.
Regarding White’s toughness, Saleh remarked, “It showed everyone else what we already know.”
Saleh announced that, provided White’s medical clearance, he would start going forward.
The first injury to White happened in the second quarter. Ed Oliver, the defensive tackle, covered him when he attempted to complete a 24-yard pass to Elijah Moore while still in the pocket. He was out of the game for two plays before he returned.
With 4:45 remaining in the third quarter, linebacker Matt Milano speared White, causing him to stay down in pain. After defensive end Greg Rousseau performed a strip sack, Flacco turned the ball over on the following play. Field goal by the Bills following the turnover. White left for the locker room, missed an entire series, and then cautiously returned to the field to finish the game.
After Wilson was benched, White—who entered the season ranked third on the team among quarterbacks behind Zach Wilson and Joe Flacco—became the starter, and he has performed admirably. Before finishing with 268 yards against the Bills, he threw for more than 300 yards in his first two starts of the season.
