Due to a catastrophic injury, the Boston Celtics’ best player officially declared his retirement.

The Boston Celtics’ game against the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday is scheduled to take place without Jayson Tatum. Tatum is recovering from a sprained left ankle he sustained during their Tuesday loss to the Golden State Warriors. It’s unclear when All-Star forward Joe Mazzulla of the Celtics will return from his injury.

Before the Celtics game, Mazzulla was questioned about any updates on Tatum’s injury. The second-year coach revealed that Tatum’s ankle is swollen and hurting, but he is unsure of when he will be able to play again.

Tatum was hurt in the first quarter, but he persevered to finish the game, which went into overtime. The fact that the Celtics are playing the second game of a back-to-back should also be noted. This is an additional consideration.

In a 132-126 loss to the Golden State Warriors, Jayson Tatum finished with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals for the Boston Celtics. By the end of the third quarter, the Celtics were in complete control and even had a 17-point lead.

Entering the fourth quarter, there was virtually no doubt that the Celtics would win because Steph Curry was in foul trouble. But as the Warriors closed out the game strong to force overtime, they found Tatum and company slacking.

Curry won in overtime, and Tatum and Jaylen Brown experienced flashbacks to the NBA Finals of 2022. In the fourth quarter and overtime, the dynamic pair only managed seven points between them (1 for-10).

This season, Jayson Tatum’s first absence will come against the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday. The Boston Celtics have relied heavily on Tatum in recent years, but they cannot afford to have him out of the lineup for an extended amount of time.

Due to injuries, Kristaps Porzingis is not playing for the Celtics, and their depth has been questioned following two significant offseason trades. However, keeping Tatum healthy is far more crucial than forcing him to play when injured.

Tatum’s next opportunity to play comes on December 23, when the Celtics take on the LA Clippers, bringing their four-game West Coast road trip to a close. On Christmas, they play the Los Angeles Lakers, and then they take a plane back to Boston to play the Detroit Pistons.
