Draymond Green of Golden State has been suspended by the NBA for five games after grabbing Rudy Gobert of Minnesota around the neck “in an unsportsmanlike and dangerous manner,” the league announced on Wednesday night.
For their parts in the incident, which occurred early in Tuesday’s Timberwolves vs. Warriors game, Gobert, his Minnesota teammate Jaden McDaniels, and Golden State guard Klay Thompson were also fined by the league–a total of $25,000.
However, in terms of missed games and lost revenue, Green will suffer the most. He will lose out on $769,704 in pay due to the suspension.
The NBA stated in the statement announcing the fines that “Green’s history of unsportsmanlike acts is based in part on the length of the suspension.” The NBA’s Executive Vice President and Head of Basketball Operations, Joe Dumars, who has been Green’s longtime mentor, imposed those sanctions.

According to the NBA, the altercation began when Thompson and McDaniels “became entangled and were grabbing and pulling at one another’s jerseys,” and it escalated when Gobert entered the fray and wrapped his arms around Thompson.
Shortly afterward, Green intervened by putting his arm around Gobert’s neck.
In addition to being given a technical foul and being ejected, Thompson and McDaniels were also given a flagrant foul two for grabbing Gobert. Green was automatically ejected for his second flagrant of the season in Golden State’s previous three games.
Green will miss his home games against Oklahoma City on Thursday and Saturday, his home game against Houston on Monday, his road game against Phoenix on November 22, and his home NBA In-Season Tournament game against San Antonio on November 24.
He could make a comeback on November 28 in Sacramento. The Warriors have lost four straight games and are 6-6 through 12 games this season, just 1-4 at home. Star guard Stephen Curry will also be out of the lineup for at least Thursday’s game due to a knee injury.
