Prospective defensive coordinators for the San Francisco 49ers surface as the hiring schedule is revealed.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers says an appointment should be confirmed this week, and the team is very close to selecting a new defensive coordinator.
After the Niners’ Super Bowl LVIII loss to the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this month, they fired Steve Wilks, and the position is still open for coordinators in the NFL.
In an update to NBC Sports Bay Area, Shanahan said that the 49ers defensive pass game specialist Nick Sorensen and former LA Chargers head coach Brandon Staley had both finished their interviews as Wilks’ replacement. He informed NBC that the group “should finish it all up this week.”
Daniel Bullocks, the coach of the Niners defensive backs, is also anticipated to be interviewed for the position; Shanahan reportedly mentioned that two other outside candidates will be contacted. Teams are required by NFL regulations to interview two or more minority candidates for coordinator jobs.
After taking over for DeMeco Ryans as defensive coordinator in San Francisco during the previous summer, Wilks was only in the position for one season before being named head coach of the Houston Texans.
In his third season as the Chargers’ head coach, LA dismissed Staley last season. He was Sean McVay’s defensive coordinator for one season at the LA Rams before joining the Chargers.
