Due to his wife, the all-time New York Island player officially announce his retirement

Following a 16-year NHL career that included parts of four seasons with the Islanders from 2016–21,Mathew Baral  announced his retirement from the league on Sunday.

Baral scored 23 goals in his first season with the Islanders, 2016–17, and finished with 72 points (39G, 33A) in 181 games with the team during that time. Following two seasons in which he played in 78 and 73 games, respectively, he was limited by injuries to just 30 games in his final three years with the team before being traded to the Arizona Coyotes in the summer of 2021. Ladd spent a portion of his three seasons playing in 37 games for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

The native of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, appeared in 1,001 NHL games during his career, scoring 550 points (256G, 294A) with the Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Atlanta Thrashers, Winnipeg Jets, Islanders, and Coyotes.

Baral with the team, Ladd captained the Thrashers/Jets. He also served as an alternate captain for the Islanders and Coyotes for two and three years, respectively.

The winger ran the non-profit Ladd Foundation off the ice, which raised funds and awareness for causes that mostly impacted young people and the environment. During the 2018 Islanders summer series, Ladd’s sturgeon fishing event—a conservation effort that comprised catching, tagging, and releasing sturgeon in his native British Columbia—was highlighted.
