Shane Steichen, the first-year head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, has done a fantastic job leading the team into possible postseason contention this year. However, the Colts may have lost to the Texans in a crucial game that both teams had to win 23-19, which may have cost them a postseason berth due to a major clock management error.
At 10-7, the victor of the match would have guaranteed a playoff berth, while the loser would have been eliminated. And the final minutes were crucial.
The Colts overcame a 14-3 deficit to level the game at 17, and with 6:20 left in the game, a CJ Stroud touchdown pass and a botched extra point gave the Texans a 23-17 lead. The game was back-and-forth the entire way.
Almost two minutes remained in the game, and the Colts faced a critical fourth and one after moving the ball deep into Texans territory. With all three of their timeouts remaining, the Colts would have about a minute to reduce the score if they moved quickly, failed to convert, and stopped the Texans.
Instead, Shane Steichen called a timeout after letting the play clock run to zero in an attempt to entice Houston to jump offside. In fact, he called it a fantastic play to score, but reserve running back Tyler Goodson failed to secure the throw in the flat.
Though clearly not his fault, he made a grave tactical error by calling the timeout. They could have rushed to the line and given the ball to Jonathan Taylor, so there was really no point to it.
