The Utah Jazz defeated the struggling San Antonio Spurs 118-102 on Saturday night after surging from a 14-point deficit behind 27 points from Lauri Markkanen and 15 more from new signing Kris Dunn.

Walker Kessler scored four of his five blocks in the last minutes of play, and Markkanen finished with 14 points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

“We attained proper spacing at last and received positive feedback,” Markkanen stated. “However, defense—just getting out in transition and running to establish a solid rhythm—was what made the difference.”

Kessler wanted to establish himself to help his team finish strong, so he was off the court during the Jazz’s first game-changing run. Kessler finished with nine points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists.

That is what I carry out. People shouldn’t be scoring in my paint, Kessler declared.

Dunn was signed by the Jazz for ten days, and he is in his second game as a defense player. When the rest of his teammates were having trouble scoring late in the game, he proved to be a facilitator and a scorer.

“I am a player of energy.” Dunn remarked, “I was trying to lead the team offensively, push the pace, and get my guys easy looks.”

Zach Collins added 15 points, Jeremy Sochan scored 22, and Keldon Johnson scored 18. The Spurs dropped their 16th straight game.

Gregg Popovich, the coach of San Antonio, stated, “We’re obviously not a 48-minute team.” Simply not old enough to realize that you need to continue. It’s a game about execution and consistency, about maintaining your competitive edge.

Dunn played well defensively and finished the game with a game-high eight assists, seven rebounds, and a 7 for 13 shooting percentage in 23 minutes.

“I’m not really known by the guys.” Playing hard and being vocal out there makes it look like I know what I’m doing, especially since I’ve only been here for a few days,” Dunn remarked.

When Dunn was playing for Chicago on January 20, 2020, he had not scored fifteen points against Milwaukee. However, in his first two games with the Jazz, who have won three of their previous four, he now has 26 points.

Utah is back in the thick of things in the Western Conference playoff hunt at.500 (31-31).

The Jazz had a disastrous first half, but Utah’s decisive third quarter saw them outscore San Antonio 30–14. The Spurs’ 14 points was a season low, and it was also the fewest points the Jazz had given up for the quarter.

The Jazz took their first lead of the game in the third quarter with a 19-4 run. With three minutes remaining, Jordan Clarkson made a layup to end the run and put Utah ahead 78-75.

Just before the buzzer, Simone Fontecchio made a 3-pointer, giving the Jazz an 85-79 lead going into the last frame. For the Spurs, who are 0-42 when trailing after three quarters, that was bad news.

From 2010 to 2019, Utah head coach Will Hardy gained experience in the coaching field with the Spurs organization.

He works very hard and has an absurdly high IQ. He began in the film room at the bottom, but it became clear very fast that he understood what the coaches wanted, according to Popovich.

The coach is therefore not in the slightest shocked by Hardy’s early success with the Jazz, who were largely picked to be among the worst teams in the league this season.
